These continue to be really tough times for the events industry. I work with some individuals and organisations who usually stage great business and consumer events throughout the year. PR work has been a bit quiet on that front (apart from news about postponements, cancellations and virtual events!) and I really feel for colleagues and friends who are at the sharp end.

In that context, it was exciting to be back with the Events Of The North team earlier this week, for the inaugural fast5K men’s and women’s races at the Three Sisters Race Track in Greater Manchester. COVID-compliant and sanctioned by UK Athletics, this was a small, elite, invitation-only event, but the organisers demonstrated how races of this nature can be safely staged in the current circumstances. I was there with Ciaran and we were both very impressed by the clearly communicated measures that were put in place, and which were closely adhered to by everyone in attendance.

The event was the brainchild of race director (and athletics legend) Steve Cram, who commented afterwards: “I hope that we will be able to host more – and potentially bigger – events in the not too distant future.”
Amen to that (and perhaps the weather will be kinder to us next time – we were certainly grateful that we had Berghaus jackets with us!).
